An evening of shopping for the Christmas party with Yuki later, she and I made our way to my parentâs house. After taking up on her offer, she helped me decorate my room for the get-together. Itâd been quite a few years since sheâd been to my house. Standing before the front door, I could see nostalgic twinkles in her eyes.
âSorry, you helped me not only with shopping but with tidying up as well.â
âDonât be,â she admonished. âIâm looking forward to the party. And Iâm stoked I can visit your old house after so many years.â
âIf you put it that way, yeah. Iâm stoked too,â I simpered. âLetâs go inside, though there wonât be anything awfully interesting there.â
Not hesitating any longer, I reached for the door and we both walked inside. I took note only my motherâs shoes were by the entrance, and not my fatherâs. Maybe he went out somehwere? Regardless, we both took off our shoes and walked down the corridorâor so I thought.
âHm, Yuki?â For some reason, she stood right outside the front door, in the biting cold. I worried she might catch something unpleasant by staying there. âCâmon up. Itâs cold, isnât it?â
âAh⌠sorry. I was just thinking, wow, this really is Haru-kunâs house. I missed it. Really did.â
âNothing has changed since those days we played together, you know?â
âYup. Itâs just as I remember it,â she had this gentle flicker of woe. âIâm glad to be back here.â
âDamn. If you saw my old room or something, you might just pass out from nostalgitis.â
With that, she also stepped inside and crouched to take off her own pair of boots. I pointed at the living room soon as she wore indoor slippers, and we were both finally in. She was a step behind, nervous.
âIâm home, Mom.â
âHi, sweetie.â
Mother was in the living room, watching TV as she coiled herself inside our kotatsu. A second later, Yuki paced and bowed greetings to her.
âMy! Yuki, youâre here~! Iâve been dying waiting!â
âThanks for always taking care of me, Haru-kunâs mother.â
âNo, no, Iâm the one indebted to you. Thank you for taking such good care of my boy,â she beamed. âAh, we were about to prepare for the Christmas party today, werenât we?â
âWe might make a bit of noise, but⌠I look forward to tomorrow.â
âMake as much as you want! Itâs just too quiet, sad, and lonely when itâs just me and Dad here. Tomorrow you and Haru will have your friends come too, right? I hanker for it.â
âMomâŚÂ Hanker?â A sigh escaped my lips. âJust, please, donât barge in.â
âHey, Iâd just like to say hello to my childâs good friend! As your parent! Hey, hey, Yuki. Donât you agree?â
âDonât get her involved,â I butt in. âAnyway, tomorrow is off-limits, Mom.â
âYouâre such a pain in the arse, you know that, son?â
Mom huffed gallingly, cheeks puffed out in protest. I still didnât have the inkling to give in, either. After all, tomorrowâ partyâs participants would all be cute girls. Iâm afraid Mother may see me surrounded by them and misunderstand something.
âOh, whereâs Dad, by the way?â
âYou told me earlier that Yuki would be here for today as well. Since itâs Christmas Eve, he went out shopping and decided to treat you to a homemade dinner. Since itâs a good opportunity, letâs feast together!â
âEh. I planned to go back to the condo as soon as we were done with the prepping,â I raised an eyebrow.
âNo, no, no. We want to have a Christmas Eve party with you both. Itâs been years, you know?â
When I was a wee little kid, Yuki and I used to party the Holidays at my house every year, without fail. Knowing both Mom and Dad missed our little parties from back then, how could I possibly refuse? As if mirroring me, Yuki also dimpled at my momâs explanation.
âIâd love to spend this Eve with you and your husband,â she started. âIf you donât mind, could you have me over then?â
âThatâs a given! And, yâknow, why donât you stay over for more than just dinner? The nightâs cold is a biting beast, and I hear it snows a lot. Moreso in this time of year.â
âReally? Is it okay if I stay over?â Her eyes sparked open.
âWhy yes, you used to bunk here back in elementary school. Brings back memories, doesnât it?â
âHmm, where am I going to sleep then?â
âYou can sleep in Haruâs room. We bought new beds for the apartment, so the old ones are still there.â
âSeriouslyâŚ?â
âSeriously. Itâs up to you, Yuki. So?â
âIâm so, so happy! Not only was I able to visit here again, but also have a party and sleepover⌠Am I dreaming, maybe?â
âThis is reality, YukiâWell then, itâs decided! Letâs have a lot of fun these few days!â
âMhm! Canât wait!â
Yuki was all smiles as she bowed her head. Seeing her so genuinely flustered made it clear how much she cared for my family. Mom smiled, too. Meanwhile, Iâm just glad to see us back to the same routine weâve always had since we were kids.
âWell, now that weâve agreed, letâs go decorate the room for tomorrowâs party,â I motioned to her.
âRight. Letâs make the most beautiful decorations ever. Together! Akina-san and Rikka-san will be stoked once they see it all ready.â
âWhen youâre done decorating, please come back to the living room. Todayâs party will be louder than ever before.â
Thus, today and tomorrow, weâd have two Christmas parties. One for our family, and another for our friends. So we could make them the busiest, loudest, and most fun parties out there, we swiftly scrambled to decorate.
